Re-Photoshoping.

Right, for some reason the film crashed and whiped the photoshopped images within our film. Therefore i had to do them again. I changed the canvas size to the size of the adobe premiere pro screen size. This was 720 pixels by 576 pixels. This fitted perfectly. I then used the same eye from the last image. I made a change to it though. I decided to change it blue because it looked more natural, unlike a red one. The red eye made it look more made up and i feel that the redness that is used shows that our production company just produces thrillers and horrors when they may not.

I made the eye smaller aswell so we were able to see all of the eye as it is quite detailed. This looked better and more proffesional. The image before looked "tacky " and looked like the fact that the eye did not fit the page properly was a mistake and not intensional.

Voiceover.

Because we have no lyrics in our music, i feel it would be good to use a voice over done by the actor so we are able to create the mood and sort of explain the storyline. Leave questions as to why he did it and why everything that is happening is happening. Later on today i am going to use garageband to create a voiceover explaining what is happening and create tension within the film.

Re-Photoshoping Again.

Once again, we lost the other title to our film. I had to change the canvas size to 720 pixels by 576 pixels. I used exactly the same fonts and i made it identical to the last one. The only thing i chnaged was the size. I decided making the title smaller and more central the title would get more attention. Within the film i will also put an effect on it so it will tie in with the film a lot more because it is inbetween the cmaera shots of the girl.

Last Minute Change.

We have had to make some very important last minute changes to our film. We have found out that the music we have used within our film is not allowed because of copyright. Therefore we ahve now had to make a new music soundtrack for our film. I have used Garageband to do this on an Apple Mac. I can now time the music in with what is happening on screen. I can cut the music when dialogue is used and i can make the music tie in with the mood on screen. When something dramatic happens, such as the screaming, i am able to build this up with different beats and instruments.

At the beginning of the film, i have decided to use a slow soft piano beat. I feel this is what should happen at the start of a thriller film because it will gradually build up tension. This is what i have done. I have chosen to build up different parts of the story by bringing in a new layer everytime something dramatic is going to happen. I have used a piano all the way through the music because i feel that piano is quite classical but also very sugestive of thrillers.

This is a convention of a thriller. The slow music usually suggests something will happen. If the music was more up beat and jumpy the film would not be so jumpy. The music also makes the mind ask questions because the music is so contrasted compared to the actually film. It fits though because of this.

What people thought..

4:00 am by CIA Productions

I watched the 4:00 am film introduction. I believe it starts very well; the music brings the tension up as it is repetitive and methodical. The way the clips are edited makes them look very emotional and interesting. This is down to the fact that they are made to be black and white, and look grainy. Also the shots are mixed in speed. Some are quite quick and punchy, whereas some of the flash back images are really jerky and all piece together to zoom into Issy’s eye. This is a shocking and realistic way of filming the clips.

When the film goes to the room where Issy is on the floor in the corner the frame around the screen, with the clock along the bottom, this looks really realistic and similar to a CCTV image which is what the students are trying to mimic. When the big 4:00 sign comes up on the screen, the mood changes and the actress starts to scream and claw at the walls. This is very realistic and makes the film very thrilling. This film would be classed as a thriller, as it has the major components of one. It has tension and drama, and shocks emotions which are what makes this film good.

Finished Film

Preliminary Task

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

As our film is low budgeted, and we would be more likely that an independent company such as Metradome will distribute our film. Metradome specialise in distributing low budget films.

A film that is very similar to ours is Firewall which was distributed by Warner Brothers. Unlike Metrodome, Warner Brothers distributes higher budget films. They were able to use big settings and better equipment to film and edit, therefore, the film in total was a lot more widely distributed around the world in festivals and premiers. As our film is low budget and would not be taken on by any big companies we would distribute it via, Facebook, Myspace and Youtube. These ill still be shown around the world but not be advertised anywhere special.

If we had access to better equipment and more money we would be able to make the film a lot more interactive and more detailed. As we don’t however, we have to stick with the basics.

Following The Conventions.

Our film is packed with conventions of a thriller. We used conventions from films that we all analysed and took them into great concideration. We used a blonde grils as the victim as this tends to happen in thrillers, they never do end up surviving. We then move into the start of the film where the main character turns to a brunette girl. We intend her to go on and be captured throughout the film, but she will survive unlike the blonde. We have used a security camera within our thriller opening and flashbacks which explains the story. These sometimes are used within thrillers because they are being watched or they want to show what had happened before hand.

We also went against the way of a thriller film by using the mmusic at the start of the film which include lyrics and isnt really what would be expected. It is more emotional. We used the music at the star tso we could explain the feeling from the males perspecive. We also used a zoom which is never used in a film but we had to work with in because the ground was to bumpy to move in to the actors.

At the start of our project we researched into the conventions and this is what we found.

Wednesday 21 April 2010

Filming Number Four.

Early morning, we went filming. We got props that included a picnic blanket, and ordinary everyday things like bags and phone. This, we thought, would make the audience feel at home. We filmed in the same place at Maggie Bottom. And this will make the audience connect and hopefully feel that something will become of this. We decided to use dialogue in this part as it isnt the opening anymore, we only needed to film the scene once as we knew exactly what we were doing.

We Are Finally Finished ?? Thought Not.

Our group showed our teachers of our finished practical. We looked over the whole thing and they thought that all in all it was a pretty good piece of work. One of our teachers anounced that it looked like a trailer. but out main teacher loved it. She loved the music and the effect and the different convensions we used. The only thing that she thought we should do is add something on to it at the end.. The timing was a bit short. Therefore we planned to go out filming for one last time.

Before, we used the conventions of a blonde girl. This was obvious to te audience that the blonde never escapes. Therefore, we thought using a brunette would add to our convensions of a thriller movie. As i am a brunette i got voted to be the actor. But if you knew me well, you would know i am not an actor !! Therefore we got a freind to do it and she was very happy to do so. We planned out on a piece of scrap paper what would happen as i is a very last minute thing. We will be going out int he next few days to film.

Editing The Titles.

I came into the lesson not knowing wha to change on the film. I got a few of my freinds to have a look at it telling them nothing of the film or what it is about.
They watched it and enjoyed the opening saying that it was a really good film. I then asked them what they thought i could improve on. They said that the titles come in and go out to quick and does not flow with the music. They also explained that it doesnt really make sense as it is the start of the film. But then again. Is itr supposed to make complete sense at the start of a film only 1 minutes 30 seconds in ? No. It is leaving a lot of questions in the audiences head.

Anyways, back to editing. My freinds said the titles come in and go out to quick and they do not fit in with the music. Therefore, i decided to let them fade in and then fade out very slowly. I found the effect bit and changed the percentage of how much of the lettering is shown and i dotted it around equally on each title.

Me and Charley then changed the font to a different font as our teachr said it was still a bit to fancy and bold. Once these were changed it was time to put the titles i made in photoshop. These were easy to put in, We saved them both as TIFF files and dragged them into were we wanted to put the clips. We put the main title in when the time on the clock turned to 4 oclock. We put our production clip at the start of our film as it will introduce us before he film starts as normal.

Sunday 18 April 2010

Back To The Editing.

Well, editing is going really well. We have made our film look like a film.. Which is a start. It has a good story line to it, using different effects and music is added on to it. It is all fitting together nicely.

We now need to make it perfect. We went through the individual clips and used the razor tool to nip off ends of this and that until we were happy with the outcome. We added clips in to make the story flow through more. This ensured us that we would get it in on the deadline. It was still 1 minute and 30 seconds though but we didnt take much notice with that as there were more important things to worry about. We put basic titles into the film. We chose a simple font in black because anything to fancy would not work with the genre. We fiddled the wording around. We used different sizes and moved it around the clip until we worked it round.

Saturday 17 April 2010

Aqualung - Strange and beautiful Official

Music.

We have finally found some music that we feel fits the genre. It may have lyrics and yeah, film openings do not tend to have lyrics at the beginning. But having everything perfect isnt fun. The convensions are all the same as thriller convensions are. Our group feels that the lyrics fit perfectly with the film as it explains the story that will later come. This mean that we will not have to have a voice over because the voice over will not work with the lyrics and to be honest, we are runny out of time ! Oneof our teachers thinks that it looks more like a trailer and the other one thinks it fits perectly. Therefore we have decided to keep it. We imported the music as a wmv file and attatched it to our film. We played around with the levels and the sounds and we figured out the perfect way.

It is called Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung.

Wednesday 7 April 2010

Our Production Title.

Thinking of a production line that will work is harder than it looks....
We thought of loads of different ones like, Chibang, Fuzz, etc, BUT.. None of them caught our eye.

We were at it for a few days tryingt o think of one that would work and that is simple. Then it suddenly hit us. "CIA PRODUCTIONS" the first letters of our names formed together. It seemed to work for us. It was simple and easy to remember.

Next though, was an image to go with the title which will be able to be used before our film to show who made it. It was a hard decision but i played around on Photoshop again and thought of a good idea. As i am in to art i thought that som sort of drawing involved in the image would make it more individual. No animation, just plain and simple like the title for our film. I tried different inages of scetches but still couldnt think.

I thought of watching the film and then c I a. Thats sorted it. Using an eye that would symbolise our business. I displayed different ways of presenting the wording around the eye and asked my group to choose the one which would work best.

This is the one all three of us decided on.

Editing Continued !

We are now getting this thing on a rolleee !
At the beginning all of the group thought we were not getting anywhere. However, now, we have finally got our acts together and it is coming along quite nicely.

We have finally found a way around the fact that some of the fliming cannot line up. We are going to use a fastened up way to the clips which will look like she has been in there for ages. She will be in different positions and will look and diffinately be distressed. This could work ! We tried t this way ad found that it is the best thing we have done to the whole film yet !

Once the clips were fasten right up, it still looked like a servalience camera, BUT, we waned more. We searched the whole pragram and found a special effect that could be added in ovr the top of the clip to make it look like a proper servalence camera. We played around with the boarder aroundt he edges and thinned the line out so the screenw as still big. The messiness of the broken screen was then added on the top so that it looked old and haggered. This useda convention of darkness within the thriller as it makes you stare and feel for the girl. Without the effects it felt as though you were in the same room as her whereas now it looks more that you are watching her from a different room and she is all alone.

We then found a timer that could be used to show. As the film is called 4AM, the timings could add up to four oclock. This worked for us well and we timed the clips up to the times it needed to be.

All in all, this session went extremely well and made us feel back on track again !

Tuesday 23 March 2010

Photoshop Time :)

Today we were unable to edit on the editing machine. Until a little bit into our lesson. Therefore i decided it would be a good idea to start our title. I exprimented a lot with the different fonts we have recently found. I played arond with the diffewrent colours and diferent was of presenting it.

I finally realised that it would look a lot more "out there" if i left it a smple as possible. As it is a thriller it would be nice if we had a massive title filling as much as the page as possible. The background should cntrast a lot wih the title which will make it stand out so much more. I experimened with a black background with a red title as this would contrast very well. To me that still looked a bit to much for a thriller film. So i just used a white font which stood out a blasted fromt the page. I used a very dissolved look for the title so it was able to pair up witht he film. This was the final outcome i designed and will be using within the opening to our film.

4am Title...

Editing So Far.

We have film loads of footage and we are happy at the moment with what we have. We have finished editing the flashbacks for the start of our opening. We have used different effect to show different conventions of a thriller. In flashbacs the convetions we have used are the mistiness and blurrness of the picture, the whole of the flashbacks are black and white. This shows that they are a memory and not clear. We have also slowed some of the clips down so the audience are able to capture the feeling and then some of them are really sped up. Speeding the clips up shows that she is panicking and confused as to what is happening. We cross cutted and made the flashbacks as best as we could. Personally i think that they are obviously flashbacks and would be shown as memories rather than what is presently happening.

Friday 19 March 2010

Editing Let Down.

We tried to edit the second part of film but we were just unable to make it flow right. Therefore we are going filming again on monday and taking into consideration how we need to edit.

We are also concerned with the amount of time we are able to be on the computers t edit. As the project is saved to one computer we ca only use it when the computer is free. A group int he year above has the same deadline and are also using the computer at every possible time. We are working around this as much as possible.

Tuesday 16 March 2010

Story Board Changing.

Because we changed had a brainwave we changed the actual guidelin of our storyboard. Therefore, we had to change the storyboarding so we were able to pan what will happen. We thought that the camera could act as a servalence camera and it would be watching her every movement. We would speed the time up when editing the clips and use different effects to look more like she is being watched. It will change again but this is the guideline of what will happen. These are the changed storyboards.

Third Time Filming.

The third time we went filming, we decided to redo the first time we went filming as we didn't really achieve anything from the first shoot. We then thought of a good plan of the person who had taken the girl would be watching her through a camera in the top left corner. She will see this and the man would walk into the room. This is when the film would start. Also because of the camera because in the corner, we are going to put a timer in the bottom of the screen when the girl is in the room. When we edit we will have to add this in.

Editing.

After we had enough footage, we went and edited on Adobe Premier Pro. We first of all go to know the program by playing around and using different effects and changing everything around. When i got to know the program well enough i started to edit the flashbacks and used the effect "Additive Dissolve". This made the thoughts look more misty and different. Because the shots were all scattered and not really in a sequence it looks confused which we were trying to bring across. We also went into the woods near our school to film some more shots of the actor waiting and then we came out the other side of the woods to a massive field where we decided to pan around the girl and move into her face where we turned the timing really fast which will be she would wake up and realise where she was.

Second Time Filming.

The second time filming we decided to film the flashbacks. We went to a field called Magpie Bottom and filmed the actor walking up and down the hill, then, in the trees and then we filmed her walking into a group of trees and bushes where she would be "taken". We filmed these shots a few tim to be able to get them right. In the end we had enough footage to be able to go back and edit.

Titles For Our Film.

We have been experimenting withdifferent fonts foro ur title. There are a few we are interested in but we are unable to decide. These are the fonts.

Brainwave.

As Charlotte has a habit of waking up at 4am every morning, she was talking to issy about how annoying it is. She then realised that this could be put into our film. She then spoke to issy about these ideas, and she was like 'you genius!'. from my annoyances, we've come up with a film title and a possible storyline.
Film title;4am.
Storyline;a girl is captured randomly, kept in a small room, and every morning at 4am (see! epic title!) the person who captured her will come into the little room and torture her in some form. The forms of torture will get worse and worse until eventually she is as unstable as he is. To end the film, the girl who has become somewhat crazy, will know that at this certain time, he will come for her and at this final time, she has had enough and attacks him. She leaves him for dead and manages to escape, but being in this environment has messed her up so much she runs to find someone to do exactly the same to. She takes this person back to the same house, and closes the door while the camera moves into her looking psychotically. The film will end with a horrific scream, and a blood spattering on the window and you won't know who's blood it is!

Friday 26 February 2010

First Time Filming

Charley told issy where to sit and how to act by using the story boards that i first made up so we were able to practice. I help do this too as i was the one filming and could see where she was able to act.

This was the room we were filming in. It was a good setting as the room was really small and darkish. Even though the lights were on inside it looked very ruined because of the stoned wall behind her.

We used a tripod so we were able to keep the camera still while we were filming. We used close ups mostly as the room was small and the tension would be more realistic if the audience were more involved in the film. It also showed all of the tiniest expressions.

When we finished the actors make- up. This is how she looked. We made it so she was beaten up and tired as this shows that something was wrong.

We used the storyboards to help with the filming as we were able to stay focused and organised all of the way through.

This was the wall with all of the stalking photographs we used.

This is the first time we began to film. We did not do much as we were only really practicing our shots and positions but it was a good start and we were able to organise ourselves for the next time we go filming. We had to make issy look as though she was had been beaten up so she went and got ready and i got ready to set up the scene.

Friday 19 February 2010

Location For Our Filming.

To film to flashbacks at the start of the film we would be needing a very big outdoor space with nobody around. We will need loads of trees and open space where we will be able to move around and change positions. Therefore we will be using Maggie Bottom next to our school which is a big field full of tiny spaces with trees sand long grass.

To film to start of the film we will be needing somewhere that looks run down. There are small interview rooms in the cabot eye with some opf the walls bare and unpainted. We will be using these because it would be the perfect setting for a run down small room that someone would be stored in.

Thursday 18 February 2010

First Storyboarding

This is the first plan of the storyboarding. It will probably change as we develop our ideas further but this is a rough outline as to what will happen. The timing of each screen shot is not yet worked out. Therefore we will fill the timings in when we are sure.

Wednesday 17 February 2010

JOBS :)

Izzie: Actress
Charley: Director
Abbie (Me): Filmer/ Director

We have all specifically chosen who would be what as we felt it would be more organised.

Friday 5 February 2010

Ideas For My Film

Our first idea would be to start the film using narration, the main character speaking. The camera would zoom into the characters face, and the eyes would open abruptly. The camera would follow the girl as she sat upright, and she would scream, the edit then cutting into a range of flashbacks of how she got to where she is. After each flashback, it would show her again, showing her emotion and confusion. This will hopefully create some enigma codes for the audience. The narration carries on throughout the 2 minutes of filming.

We would have a secondary idea, but as we planned these ages ago, we have set ourselves to do this one. It is just a rough outline on what we want to do, so there will probably be variations on the ideas, as they are just a frame.

My Intensions

Through my analysis i understand the conventions of an thriller film opening to build up suspense and tension. I doesnt need to show anything that should scare the audience just leave questions in there head to what is going to happen. In my groups research, we found that more people like a thriller opening that has a meaing and that should start with something strange which gives you questions. This will make them want to watch the rest of the film to understand what happens. It should not be dragged however, as it may get a bit boring. The three thriller film openings i analysed had these conventions and gave me many questions of what would happen in the film. The first film opening "paranormal activity" had nothing worrying or scary involved. The whole two minutes they were both happy and "loved up". The only thing they say which gives the audience a question is that they will catch whatever paranormal activty that is going on. This leaves questions in the audiences head and makes you wonder what he means by that. The other film opening i analysed "arlington road" has no dialogue inivolved what so ever. But the way the shots and blurriness is used and the suspense of what is wrong with the boy, builds up inside you. I would like to use this in the start of our film as i feel that the why it is laid out and the different blurred shots that are used makes the audiences want to watch more to find out what is happening. Nothing is seen within the few minutes of watching but it obvious something is wrong.

Through my target audience research i found that our most likely audience is between the ages of 15-24. They are all mostly female which means we will have to base our film opening towards young females rather than males. Therefore our film opening will give tension. It will not give much away because we want the audience to ask questions and want to watch the rest of the film. No bloodiness or grossness will be involved, it will just simply gives questions that will need to be answered. However, i plan to change the conventions by not making the film opening drag out for to long because people will not find it as exciting. It will be quick and snappy and once the opening is over it will go straight into the next part of the story. This will make the audience want to be more involved and their minds will be cracking with excitement.

Anything else you'd like to add about what you like about thriller films?
- it depends what you class as thriller I guess... I don't like things that make me jump, I think of that more in horror films... if films like Speed are classed as thrillers then I like the tension of wondering if things are going to go badly or if it will all be fixed in the last minute.
- more in relation to the last question, i'd expect there to be something of a sort of mystery to happen, that is basically what the plot goes down to solving. i don't really watch that many thriller films, but when i do i like to have to guess what's really happening, rather than it all just being laid out on a plate from the start.
- the twist at the end. i think a good thriller knows how to create an ending no one would suspect, leaving the audience wanting more.
- they should star johnny depp. that's a helpful answer, right? yeah thought so.
- i think it depends on your definition of a "thriller." i'm not very fond of movies that always have something jumping out at you to make you jump. i think it's because it gets me every time. i also don't really like blood and gore, so horror movies are not really my favorite genre. i don't mind movies that are just suspenseful, those can actually be quite good.
- an awesome twist.

Analysing Paranormal Activity Opening

Paranormal activity is a perfect example of a pshicological thriller. It opens with a black screen with white writing on with writing that portrays the film to be real life. The first shot the audience sees is a long shot of a flat screen television and the camera then moves around in a wobbly way. This straight away shows you it is a hand held camera which makes the audience feel that it is real. The camera leads to a reflection of a middle aged man holding a very big and heavy camera in the mirror. This shows that he has a lot of money because of this big expensive camera. The camera then shows the audeince around the lounge and shows the stairs. This gives the audience a sense of welcome into the house. The phone then starts ringing in the background and the audience are then led to the kitchen by the camera. The middle aged man then answers the phone and the camera then cuts to outside the front door watching a small white convertable that has a young woman inside. Obviously they are partners by the way they speak to eachother. The man calls her "baby", and straight away she asks what he is holding in his hand. This shows that the two of them have a very close relationship. The camera is slowly zooming in to the woman sat on the drivway in her car while chatting. The man is obviously experimenting with his new camera by the tone of his voice. The man then asks her to park the car and the camera cuts to the woman walking through the door talking to him. They are messing around with the camera and she kisses him which then shows they live together and that they are very close, young partners. Still hand held the man shows the womans every move. He watches he go up the stairs and shows thier everyday life which makes the film look even more realistic. It is based in a bogstandard house with normal furniture in a normal street, which makes the film seem more real because it could happen to anybody. She then starts messing around and experimenting with the camera herself and only seeing the archway of the lounge, you hear in the background them talking why they have the camera. She asks him if he thinks it will work and he says that it will catch whatever "paranormal activities" that are occuring in the house. This gives away the story and the audience then understand what is going to happen and the storyline .
